JESUS CAME TO CALL SINNERS (Saturday after Ash Wednesday, Lenten Journey, Day 4)

During this season, we are constantly reminded of the need for repentance and conversion. We can’t talk about the need for repentance and conversion if we are sinless. Thus, there is need for repentance and conversion because of our sinfulness. The word “sinfulness” might appear to be too vague and abstract that we may find it difficult to relate more concretely with. But when we reflect on our concrete inter-personal relationships (relationship with others), we would immediately come to see that there are areas in our relationships with others where we are not getting it right.

In the 1st reading (cf. Isa. 58:9c-14), Isaiah pointed out to the people of Israel some of those practical areas where they are not getting it right. And all of those areas have to do with their relationship with one another: “the pointing of the finger, speaking wickedness, not caring for the hungry and satisfying the desires of the afflicted.” Those are some of the areas that would help us understand in very practical terms that we too are sinners in need of God’s mercy.

In the encounter between Jesus and the Pharisees as He dined with tax collectors in Levi’s house (cf. Luke 5:27-32), we see a man whose core mission is to call sinners to repentance, not to condemn them. And we should be full of joy and hope because Jesus also came for us, sinners; to call us to repentance and healing.

A deeper reflection will help us realize that sin indeed makes us sick in the spirit. We are all sick, no exception. But our healer is not far from us. His name is Jesus. During this Lenten Season, let us grow in greater awareness of the need for us to always present ourselves to Him for healing, turn away from our sins and follow Jesus as Levi did.

Prayer:

Jesus Our Healer, we present ourselves for healing. Heal our sick souls and set free from the shackles of sin, Amen!

May we have a restful weekend as we continue with our Lenten Journey!
