Perfect love casts out fear (Wednesday after Epiphany)

Yesterday (Tuesday after Epiphany), St John was clear enough as he established the fact that “God is love and love is of God” (cf. 1 Jn. 4:7.8). And the gospel account of the Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand (cf. Mk. 6:34-44) served as a practical demonstration of love as the nature, identity and mission of God. From all of the above then, I think we have enough ground to conclude that THE ONLY MISSION OF GOD IN THE WORLD IS NOTHING BUT LOVE. It was LOVE that propelled Him to take our flesh, live with us and die for us.

But in the event of Jesus walking on the sea (cf. Mark 6: 45-52), it appears the disciples didn’t quickly perceive that the core mission of Jesus is love. They did not quickly grasp the point that what underlines the incarnation is LOVE. They were dull to comprehend that out of love God chose to perpetuate His presence in their midst.

Just like the disciples, when anyone fails to get this very point, the person will live in perpetual fear. Faith will diminish and fear will take over. This may explain the reaction of the disciples when they saw Jesus walking on the sea: out of fear they cried out thinking that He was a ghost. Because they lacked faith, they were not able to see JESUS the Emmanuel (the one who has come to be with them both in good and awful moments). Rather, they saw what He was not: they saw a terror, they saw a ghost.

We must take to heart St John’s statement that “Perfect love casts out fear” (cf. 1 Jn. 4:18). To LOVE sincerely is to be gradually, intensely and mystically configured to the perfect image of Christ. When and where there is more love, there will be more faith. When faith increases, fear diminishes. If we truly love God and love one another, our faith in God, in ourselves and in one another will undoubtedly grow. And if faith grows, there will be no fear of the “other”, no fear of what the future holds, no fear of negative thoughts and so on. We may be battered and pummeled by the storms and challenges of life but having been immersed in and enlightened by the LOVE of the Father (perfectly expressed in Jesus the God-with-us), we will have nothing to fear.

Prayer:

Perfect us in love, O Lord, so that we won't be afraid of bearing witness to You in the world, Amen.

Have a beautiful day!
