Having a Spiritual Sight (Monday, Week 33, Year 2)

It is not everybody who sees that sees very well. This applies both in the physical and spiritual realms. Spiritually and morally, there are those who see what they want to see and disregard the rest. There are those who see things that are at close range but can’t see the ones that are far removed. There are those who can see things that are far away very clearly but can’t see those that are close.

Just as it is with those who are visually impaired in the physical realm, in the spiritual realm many people may be “visually impaired” or unable to “see” the spiritual wars going on between the spirit of evil and that of Christ in creation, in their environments and in their very lives. This conflict can take the form of physical persecution of Christians (just like the ISIS, the communist China, etc). It can take the form of the many temptations that we have: temptations by worldly values such as money and pleasure. Such was the battle that was raging in the Church of Ephesus which appeared as if they were already losing to the enemy. And that was why they were told that they have abandoned their first love (cf. Rev. 2:4); and were thus told to repent and reignite the initial love they had for God. All in all, the Ephesians became spiritually blind to see that Christ has won the decisive victory over evil and death, a victory in which all of us will share.

It is to announce this victory over evil (over the physical manifestation of evil in the blind man) that Jesus told the blind man he was about to cure: “receive your sight; your faith has made you well” (cf.  Luke 18:35-43). We may be having our own spiritual battle in the form of temptations that come our way, temptations to give up; to yield to the side of evil; to stop loving; to stop doing good and to stop speaking against evil. Let us be strengthened by the fact that at last, enemies of Christ, all forces of evil, will be beneath His feet. As we await that final victory, let us cooperate with His grace in fighting against them.
